Meet Our Team



​Dr. Heather Shaffer DVM.

Veterinarian and Owner

Heather Shaffer is a native of Romney, West Virginia.  After graduating from Hampshire High School in 1997.  Heather received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Fairmont State College in 2001, attended West Virginia University, and obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 2007. Heather now lives in Augusta with her husband and 4 children where she has a small farm with horses, cattle, and pigs.  Heather has a Golden Retriever named Hudson and a Great Dane named Ally.  She has several cats including Huckleberry, Blackie, and Mocha, as well as a Flemish Giant Cross rabbit named Carrot.  Her hobbies include photography, horseback riding, coaching youth sports, and attending WVU sporting events.   Heather’s special interests in the veterinary field include soft tissue surgery, dentistry, ultrasonography, and feline internal medicine.  In addition, she enjoys taking care of small pocket pets.  Heather wanted to be a veterinarian from the time she was 5 years old.  She worked with Dr. Hott in 1996-97 as a high school student.  Heather brings 14 years of experience to the practice and is very excited to work back in Hampshire County.

Lainie Umstot
Veterinary Assistant

Lainie Umstot grew up in Augusta West Virginia and graduated  from Hampshire High School in 2021. Lainie plays an active role in the community and is a vetted volunteer. Lai​nie has graduated from Potomac State college with an Associates Degree in General Studies.  Lainie is currently in Penn Foster to obtain her degree in Veterinary Technology. She has been working in Veterinary Medicine since 2021 and enjoys working in this field. Lainie lives in Shanks WV on her farm with her fiancé Brian and her daughter Wrenley.  She enjoys being outdoors with all her animals.  She has four dogs; Oakley, Dixie, Hazel and Remi, and four horses; Maverick, Stella, Katlyn and Scarlett.  Lainie has a strong interest in all animals but a love for equine. She has eight horses of her own on her farm Lainie is thankful to have this opportunity to serve the community and help as many animals as possible.

Trish Alkire
Veterinary Assistant
​Trish is a proud resident of Hampshire county,  living in Augusta on her farm with her Husband Roger, Son David and Daughter Elizabeth. Her oldest Daughter Brittany will soon make her a Mimi to a grandson in September.  She has a granddaughter, Peyton and a son in law Noah now.  Having a strong love for all animals she enjoys working at the  Augusta Animal Hospital. When she can't be found at the clinic you can find her working hard on her farm or running her youngest daughter to various sports and practicing and working with her drill team horse. In addition to her already busy schedule she also coaches soccer, is very active in 4H as well as spending all of fair week helping in the barn. When she does have spare time she spends it camping at the river, or riding her horses. ​

Alexis Riggleman
Veterinary Assistant
Alexis was born and raised in Hampshire County W.V. in the Green Spring area. She attended Hampshire High School where she graduated in 2021. During her High School years, Alexis was a member of FFA where her animal of choice for raising and showing were cows. Alexis has earned her American Degree in FFA and attended Potomac State for pre-vet.  She is now attending San Juan College Online to get her Veterinary Technology Degree to become a licensed Veterinary Technician and will graduate in 2027.  With a strong work ethic Alexis has always maintained multiple jobs, so you never know where you might see her. Alexis's favorite breed of dog is the German Shepherd. She has two German Shepherds of her own, Maizy and Maple May. ​

​Tren Crane
Veterinary Assistant
Tren was born and raised in Hampshire County WV.  She is a  2023 graduate  of Hampshire High School, where she excelled at soccer  graduated with honors. She is currently enrolled at Potomac State College working on her career in Veterinary Medicine. Tren has a great love  for Animals especially her Mini Aussie Indy & her Great Pyrenees BentleyV. Whenever she is not working or in school, you can find her riding one of her horses.

Kiley Greenway
Veterinary Assistant

​Kiley grew up in Rock Cave W.V. where she attended and graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School. After graduation Kiley married her Husband Michael Brent Greenway of 22 years. Kiley was blessed to be a stay at home Mom and raise her children Shyanne, Caleb, & Joselynn. Kiley has three dogs and three cats who are all happily spoiled. After her children grew up and graduated, with her love of animals  Kiley decided to pursue her passion. Kiley is grateful to Augusta Animal Hospital for giving her the opportunity to be a part of the team. ​

Kenna Schermerhorn
Veterinary Assistant

Kenna started with Augusta Animal Hospital a few years ago first as a cleaner and worked into a veterinary assistant position.  She has a knack for bottle raising kittens and puppies.  She has a mini aussie named Lump that come to the clinic with her occasionally.  Veterinary medicine has become her love and she is now going to Penn Foster for their Veterinary Technology course to become a licensed Veterinary Technician in 2027.  


​Joselynn Greenway
Kennel & Back Office Assistant

Joselynn grew up in West Virginia and attended some early years at the WV Deaf & Blind School and homeschooled her middle and high school years.  She is hard of hearing and very fluent in ASL and has always had a passion for animals and helping break down the language barrier between hearing and deaf.  She has one dog, Daisy which is her universe and two cats.  After graduating her dream was to pursue her passion with animals and to love on as many as she could while representing the hard of hearing and deaf community.  She is crushing her dreams one day at at time.

Hayden Davidson
Kennel & Back Office Assistant

I am Hayden Davidson and I am born and raised in Hampshire County, WV. I am a 2026 Hampshire High School Graduate. I have played volleyball for 8 years and I plan to continue playing in college at Wilson College. I plan on majoring in Veterinary Nursing with a concentration in Veterinary Equi-Assist. I have always had a love for animals especially my dog Mila, and my goats Cookie  and Jelly. If I’m not working or playing volleyball then I’m outside walking trails and hiking up mountains.


​​Nicole Hobday
Office Manager & Head Receptionist
Nicole Hobday grew up in Berkley Springs WV. After graduating from Berkley Springs High she started working in the medical field. In 2007 she moved to Augusta where she currently lives with her fiancé Raymond and their Daughter Shaye. Nikki also has a son named Jaggar & a Grandson Boone. She has two Jack Russell's named Nakita and Harley and her kitty Myla. With a strong love for animals Nikki made the change to veterinary medicine in 2024 after 24 years in the medical field. She enjoys spending time with her family, riding motorcycles with Raymond, and working in her flower beds.

​Jennifer Goetz
Veterinary Receptionist
Jennifer Goetz grew up in West Virginia spending most of her time with animals. Jennifer graduated from Hampshire High School in 1994.  Her love for animals took her to Baltimore where she worked as a Vet tech and Receptionist for five years.  Jennifer lives in Augusta with her husband. Together, they take care of their little farm, raising chickens, dogs and cats.  Jennifer’s love for animals doesn’t stop at home.  Over the last ten years Jennifer helped raise thousands of dollars for shelters and animal control services. Helping those that can’t help themselves is her motto.

​​Barb Havins
Practice Manager

Barb and her late husband moved to WV in the  1990’s prior she lived in Arizona and Maryland.  After graduating high school she went to Long Medical in Phoenix Arizona for a Veterinary Assisting Program.  She has been working in the Vet Med ever since.  She started working in large animals at an Equine Reproduction Clinic in Buckeye Arizona and then since moving to West Virginia she worked many years in the small animal veterinary field.   She lives in Levels, WV where she raises and trains miniature horses for the performance field of jumping, trail and driving.  She also has a few large horses, her main horse is Betty a thoroughbred mare that she pleasure rides and enjoys doing Parelli Natural Horsemanship with.  She also has young quarter horse colt, Jasper that she is starting in the Parelli Program.  She has a mini aussie, Rosebud, that helps her keep the farm running smoothly by trying to herd the Nigerian Dwarf goats she raises, but she does a very poor job at it.  She also has a Chihuahua, Dobby that usually goes everywhere with her.  You may see him strutting his way through the office with her coming to work.
